Contact lens fitting is a meticulous process that encompasses various factors, including precise measurements, the selection of suitable materials, and comprehensive fitting guidance, especially for multifocal lenses. This dedicated page serves as a valuable resource hub, offering links to tools and references aimed at simplifying and enhancing the contact lens fitting experience for your patients.
Contact Lens Calculators
It can be tough to remember certain equations and rules when it comes to selecting contact lens parameters. The Eye Care Advocate has compiled a selection of calculators that will aid in your contact lens clinics, should you need assistance.
Back Vertex Distance Calculator – by Gareth Cooper
Back Vertex Distance Calculator
Use this online tool to easily calculate a contact lens power from a spectacle prescription of any given back vertex distance.
Contact Lens Power Calculator – by Bausch & Lomb
This contact lens power calculator provides quick calculation of contact lens powers from spectacle prescription, providing a recommendation on an initial trial lens. Be advised that this does not allow for custom back vertex calculations and may provide inaccurate suggestions of powers from different manufactures regarding their toric and multifocal suggestions. Additionally, there is no option to select the patient’s dominant eye.
Multifocal Fitting Calculator – by Johnson & Johnson
Johnson & Johnson Multifocal Fitting Calculator
This contact lens power calculator provides quick calculation of contact lens powers from spectacle prescription, providing a recommendation on an initial trial lens from the Johnson & Johnson contact lens range. Be advised that this does not allow for custom back vertex calculations (but does calculate from a stated 12 mm BVD) and may provide inaccurate suggestions of powers from different manufactures regarding multifocal suggestion.
This calculator also provides the option to select the patient age and ocular dominance, which may even improve the recommendations for the most optimal initial lens.
Upon recommendation of the initial trial lens, it also provides options on what to select if you require an enhancement to either near or distance vision.
Myopia Calculator – by Brien Holden Vision Institute
The Myopia Calculator, a free tool from the Global Myopia Centre, courtesy of the Brien Holden Vision Institute, aims to connect research data with users. It presents different ways to manage myopia, illustrating potential benefits over time for those considering myopia progression treatment.
Please note, this requires registration and log in to the Brien Holden Vision Institute Website.
