About The Eye Care Advocate

Hello, I am Jason Searle. I am a UK based optometrist, and I founded The Eye Care Advocate to bridge a gap that I saw widening within our profession.

Having worked in nearly 60 practices across two countries and nine different healthcare areas, I have seen optometry from almost every angle. From teaching and research to the daily reality of the high street, my career has been driven by a simple belief: we can do better for our patients, our businesses, and our workforce.

Why This Platform Exists

During my time as a locum and associate lecturer, I noticed that the transition from textbook to testing room is often a steep climb. Real patients are rarely like the ones we encounter in OSCEs or exams. They don’t always give the “expected” answers to our questions, and the pressure of a busy clinic can make the basics feel surprisingly complex.

I created this website to be a resource that instils confidence in those core foundations. My goal is to help professionals and students move past the mental fatigue of working out abnormal findings so they can focus on what matters: the person in the chair.

A Focus on the Workforce

I feel strongly that if the workforce isn’t looked after, patients cannot be seen and businesses eventually collapse. We deserve to be happy and supported in our roles. The Eye Care Advocate is built on a moral compass that values autonomy, respect, and wellbeing. I want to ensure we reach the high standards set for us without burning out in the process.

Integrity and Independence

Trust is everything in healthcare. You will notice that this site is not cluttered with intrusive advertisements. I avoid traditional sponsorships because I refuse to be swayed into providing information that does not align with my professional ethics. In a world where people are often sceptical of “Big Optical” or “Big Pharma” calling the shots, I choose to remain transparent.

The platform is largely self-funded and supported by the community platform. If a post is ever sponsored, it will be clearly marked. Even then, I will personally identify the pros and cons to ensure you receive balanced, honest information. My integrity is not for sale.

The Learning Companion and Community

The next step in this journey is our premium community. This is more than just a community forum; it is a learning companion designed to be a judgment-free space. Whether you are a student or a seasoned professional, you can ask the questions you might feel “should” already be known. By mastering the basics together, we build the efficiency and confidence needed to thrive in a high street environment.

Within, there are practice resources, simulators, courses, motivational guidance, a digital copy of my book (see below) and case studies. The low price set has been chosen to ensure it is accessible for those that need it – whilst making sure the project remains sustainable.

There are also a hand-picked selection of qualified professionals within the community (our community experts) that share a wealth of knowledge and experience to help support you through your formative years.

Resources for Growth

Beyond the community, I continue to write about the industry and engage with other mentors to push for progress.

I also authored the study guide History and Symptoms: The Eye Examination, which is currently a 5-star rated resource on Amazon. It uses twenty fictional characters to help you practise case history taking and reflections, showing exactly what patient answers mean for the clinical outcome. A digital version of this book is available as part of The Eye Care Advocate Community membership.

Ultimately, The Eye Care Advocate is here to provide trustworthy information for the public and a supportive, practical home for the optical workforce. We strive to do the right thing, even when it is tough, because that is what our profession and our patients deserve.
